Bowdens may develop around well-known Georgia plantation

(Thomasville, Georgia-AP) Aug. 21, 2005 - Clemson football coach Tommy Bowden is part of a group that may develop homes and condominiums on the grounds of a historic plantation in South Georgia.

Bowden's father, Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden, and brother Steve, are among the other investors in January to buy the Melhana plantation for $2.7 million.

The previous owners ran the plantation as a bed and breakfast. They were facing foreclosure.

The original cotton plantation was started and the original house on it built in the 1820s. The main house was substantially expanded in 1905.

Melhana is an area dotted by nearly 100 pre-Civil War plantations between Tallahassee, Florida and Thomasville, Georgia.
