Health Alert: Study links coffee to lower risk of diabetes

(National-NBC) July 6, 2005 - Having a morning cup of coffee could help lower your risk for diabetes.

A new study finds people who drank about four cups a day had nearly a 30 percent lower risk of type two diabetes compared with those who drank only two cups a day.

Researchers believe components in coffee are beneficial to blood sugar and insulin levels. They say the benefits are also seen in decaffeinated coffee, but it's too early to recommend increasing coffee consumption as a way to prevent type two diabetes.

The results stem from 15 studies on coffee consumption and type two diabetes including almost 200,000 participants.

The study was led by researchers at Harvard School of Public Health and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
