South Carolina native mentioned as possible Supreme Court replacement

(Columbia-AP) July 2, 2005 - South Carolina native and Fourth US Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Karen J. Williams has been mentioned by some as a possible replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

But College of Charleston political scientist David Mann says it's a long shot.

Williams is the daughter-in-law of former state Senator Marshall Williams. She was appointed to the federal bench in 1992 by President Bush's father.

She was the first female on the Fourth Circuit.
