(Washington-AP) May 24, 2005 - The lawmakers who pulled the Senate away from its filibuster fight say they're determined to build trust amid intense political rancor.
Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham says Republicans and Democrats have to talk. He says Senators can't let special interest groups drive them off the edge. Democratic West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd says the Senate needs to restore reason to partisan fervor.
Fourteen senators reached across party lines to strike a compromise to avoid an explosive battle over judicial nominations and filibusters. Their two-page memo cleared a path for many of President Bush's stalled judicial nominees and preserved historic filibuster rules.
The group included Democrats spread from the Northeast to Hawaii, and Republicans from Maine to Arizona.
