Judge mulls request for Myrtle Beach black biker weekend injunction

(Florence-AP) April 25, 2005 - An attorney for the NAACP told a federal judge Monday that Myrtle Beach discriminates against black bikers during a festival each Memorial Day weekend.

Paul Hurst says the city has one plan for white tourists and a more oppressive plan for black tourists.

Traffic on Ocean Boulevard is limited to one-way during Atlantic Beach Bikefest. Traffic is not restricted during a predominantly white bike event held the previous week.

An attorney for the city James Van Osdell says the one-way pattern was put into effect because the problems associated with the younger age of those attending, not their race.

The NAACP wants the judge to stop the city from using the one-way plan next month. US District Judge Terry Wooten says he'll have a decision as soon as he can.
