(Hartford, Connecticut-AP) April 20, 2005 - Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell says a new law recognizing same-sex civil unions in her state does not erode marriage, as opponents claim.
Rell signed the legislation Wednesday after it cleared the Connecticut Senate. She noted that the law contains a provision defining marriage as being between a man and a woman.
That still doesn't sit well with opponents who wanted Rell to veto the measure. They believe civil unions are essentially gay marriage with a different name. The Family Institute of Connecticut plans to hold a rally Sunday.
A gay rights group wanted lawmakers to pass a gay marriage bill. But it calls civil unions an important step toward protecting the rights of same-sex couples.
Connecticut joins Vermont and Massachusetts as the only states with laws that provide far-reaching benefits to same-sex couples.
