(Atlanta, Georgia-AP) April 9, 2005 - A lawyer for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick says the football player will defend himself against a lawsuit accusing him of knowingly giving a woman a sexually transmitted disease.
A woman who claims to be Vick's former girlfriend filed the lawsuit. It says the 24-year-old Vick infected her with genital herpes in April 2003.
Vick's attorney, Lawrence Woodward of Virginia Beach, Virginia issued a statement Friday saying Vick intends to defend himself against the charges. But the statement says Vick will not allow the lawsuit to, "distract him from his primary goal of bringing a championship to the fans of Atlanta."
Sonya Elliott, 26, filed the civil suit last month in Gwinnett County State Court. It seeks unspecified damages for Vick's alleged negligence, unwanted physical contact and potential future medical complications.
Woodward has until May sixth to respond to the lawsuit.
