Lexis Nexis-owned firm reports security breach

(NY-AP) March 10, 2005 - About 32,000 Americans will be getting word their Social Security numbers and other personal information have been compromised.

The security breach occurred at a database company owned by Lexis Nexis. Intruders used passwords and ID's from legitimate customers to get the information.

The head of Lexis Nexis says it will provide those affected with credit monitoring, so any identity theft may be quickly detected and addressed. The database firm, called Seisint, stores millions of personal records, including addresses and Social Security numbers.

It's the second such breach reported this year. Last month, data broker ChoicePoint Incorporated reported that the personal information of 145,000 Americans may have been compromised.
