House subcommittee approves bill limiting medical malpractice lawsuits

(Columbia-AP) Feb. 24, 2005 - The House Constitutional Laws subcommittee has given a favorable report to a bill limiting medical malpractice lawsuits.

The Senate passed a similar bill last week, putting a $350,000 cap on non-economic damages such as pain and suffering.

Supporters say the cost of doing business is driving doctors out of some specialties, including obstetrics and neurosurgery.

Opponents say doctors and hospitals that are responsible for severe injuries or death have to be held financially accountable.
