(Charleston-AP) Jan. 27, 2005 - Morris Island in Charleston Harbor is for sale with an ad on eBay.
Developer Harry Huffman ran into opposition last year trying to get zoning approval for 20 homes on the 125 acres of high ground. The asking price for the property advertised as Cummings Point is $12.5 million. It's being marketed for one large home.
The Civil War Preservation Trust has listed Morris Island among its ten most endangered battlegrounds. The island was where the black 54th Massachusetts mounted an 1863 attack against Confederate defenses at Battery Wagner, a battle from the movie "Glory."
Huffman has been negotiating with several conservation groups who want to buy the island. He says he posted it on eBay to see if there was any other interest.
