New pill camera helps diagnosis with throat problems

(National) Nov. 29, 2004 - The FDA has just approved a new tool to help doctors diagnose diseases of the esophagus.

The vitamin-sized pill contains two tiny cameras that take pictures after it's swallowed.

Images from the camera pill help doctors diagnose problems like acid reflux and early signs of esophageal cancer.

Studies of the ESO pill show it's just as accurate the standard screening test, endoscopy, for diagnosing these problems.

It takes about 20 minutes for the pill to travel through the esophagus. Patients lie down in the doctor's office while the pill makes it's way down.

The pill takes about 2600 color pictures in the 20 minute travel time. The pictures are transmitted to a recorder which the patient wears during the procedure.

Patients can go home immediately after the short test. The Eso pill is made by Given Imaging .
