DeMint: Abolish the IRS

(Mt. Pleasant-AP) Sept. 10, 2004 -- Republican US Senate candidate Jim DeMint says it's time to abolish the Internal Revenue Service and replace the nation's tax code with something more simple.

DeMint is the congressman from the state's Fourth Congressional District. DeMint says the nation's tax code is killing jobs in America and forcing business overseas. Last year, he introduced a bill to create a bipartisan commission that would develop an alternative for the tax code.

DeMint's Democratic opponent, state Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum, has criticized DeMint's support of a proposed national sales tax. She calls it "regressive taxation" that would hit hardest those who can least afford to pay.

DeMint says a national sales tax would be revenue neutral and not raise any new taxes. He says the important thing is that someone do something about the nation's convoluted tax code.

Tenenbaum spokeswoman Kay Packett says the Democrat supports reviewing and simplifying the tax code. But Tenenbaum wants to be sure it does not increase taxes for middle class families.
