Chicago mayor outlines elaborate camera network for city

(Chicago-AP) Sept. 10, 2004 - Smile, you're on Chicago camera.

Mayor Richard Daley has outlined plans for a city-wide public surveillance network that would put cameras in more than 2,000 locations.

Daley says the network would use sophisticated software to alert authorities to potential crimes or terror acts. He says it's the "next best thing to having officers" at every potential trouble spot.

More than $5 million from a federal homeland security grant would pay for the project, which wouldn't begin until spring 2006.

The bulk of the cameras are already in place at O'Hare International Airport and along city transit lines and other areas.

The American Civil Liberties Union says it's not worried about cameras infringing in privacy, as long as they're recording acts in public areas.
