Announcer for Elvis has left the building

(Memphis, Tenn.-AP) Aug. 23, 2004 - Another page in the Elvis story has passed into legend.

Al Dvorin was thrown from the car he was riding in Sunday after it swerved off a desert road near Ivanpah, the California Highway Patrol said. Dvorin is believed to have originated the line, "Elvis has left the building." The night before, Dvorin performed his signature closing line at an Elvis impersonator concert in California.

He's credited with the phrase that pays tribute to Elvis Presley and that means an event is over. The phrase intended to disperse audiences who lingered in hopes of an Elvis encore.

Dvorin was with Elvis from his early days until his last tour in 1977. Many people claim to have created the famous phrase, though Dvorin always said he came up with it on his own. Everyone agrees that he is the one that made "Elvis has left the building" a cultural catch-phrase.

Dvorin was 81.
