DeMint supports buying cheaper drugs from Canada, Tenenbaum agrees

(Columbia-AP) Aug. 5, 2004 - Republican Senate candidate Jim DeMint says he supports allowing people to buy cheaper prescription drugs in Canada.

The three-term congressman says he wants to open US markets to prescription drug sales from Canada, the European Union and other nations. He sponsored a bill in the House last year, but it stalled in the Senate.

DeMint says American drug companies are selling drugs to Canada and European counties for half and even a third of what the companies are selling them for in the United States.

DeMint says local pharmacies should have the right to purchase prescription drugs at the lowest cost, whether it's from companies in America or another country.

DeMint's Democratic opponent, Inez Tenenbaum, agreed with the Republican on this issue. Her spokeswoman says it's outrageous that seniors in South Carolina have to pay more than seniors in Canada for the same drugs.
