(Hampton Roads, Virginia) May 27, 2004 - More than 350 sailors are back with their families Thursday afternoon after spending nearly six months at sea.
The USS Cole returned to port in Hampton Roads, Virginia, Thursday morning. The guided missile destroyer was deployed from Naval Station Norfolk on November 28th of last year.
Since then, that ship and two others have participated in regional exercises with allies and made diplomatic visits to ports while remaining on alert to support the War on Terrorism.
Those other two ships, the USS Gonzalez and the USS Thorn, are expected back at the Naval Station on Friday. They'll bring another 700 sailors home.
The Cole is the same ship that was attacked by suicide bombers in October 2000 in Yemen. It was brought back to the US for $250 million in repairs before being put back into service. This was the ship's first overseas deployment since the terror attack.
