(Columbia-AP) May 19, 2004 -- Republican US Senate candidate Jim DeMint says he stands by a campaign television ad that criticizes lawyers. The outgoing president of the South Carolina Bar had demanded an apology.
The ad shows DeMint saying, "If we're going to protect the jobs of the future, we need to get the politicians, the bureaucrats and the lawyers to stop sucking the life out of American business." The ad ran statewide from the end of March through the first few weeks of May.
Spartanburg lawyer Kenneth Anthony, Junior, asked the third-term congressman to apologize and stop running the ad that he says slanders every lawyer in the state. Anthony says lawyers are trying to help businesses protect themselves from laws and regulations imposed by government.
DeMint says the ad explains his position on legal reform and economic development.
