(Columbia-AP) May 19, 2004 - A bill to make it easier to set up charter schools is on its way to the Senate. The Senate Education Committee passed the bill on Wednesday.
Charter schools are independent public schools designed and operated by educators, parents, community leaders and educational entrepreneurs.
The bill would create a statewide school district that could also determine whether to approve new charter schools. Currently a local school district must approve a charter school before it can open.
Supporters say they give parents choices without going outside the public school system. Opponents say money spent on charter schools could be better used to improve public schools.
A different version has already passed the House. It's unclear if there will be time for the bill to pass before lawmakers adjourn June 3rd.
