Senate panel approves bill calling for safe routes to school

(Columbia-AP) April 28, 2004 -- A bill aimed at helping students walk safer routes to school cleared a Senate Education subcommittee Wednesday.

The House bill requires school districts to establish committees responsible for making sure students have safe walking routes to school.

Safe Routes to School District Coordinating Committees would include citizens and local officials who will gather information on hazards facing students. The information would come from surveys and traffic counts done around the school campuses. Donations, loans or federal grants would pay for the committees' work.

The bill now moves to the full Education Committee.
