Bose completing round of Blythewood layoffs Friday

(Blythewood) March 26, 2004 - The Bose Corporation is scheduled to complete a string of layoffs in Blythewood on Friday.

According to a schedule filed with the Employment Security Commission, 130 employees were laid off on March 12th, and an additional 25 are being let go Friday.

In December Bose announced the Blythewood plant would discontinue the production of a product. The radio and home entertainment maker is moving part of its manufacturing operation to Mexico.

According to the company's web site, the Bose Corporation was founded in 1964 by MIT professor Dr. Amar G. Bose. A portion of the web site's "Operating Philosophy" says the company "would be a place where people had reason to be passionate about their work; where when you had a great idea you would be encouraged to develop it, run with it, champion it to its completion."

Bose employed about 900 people in South Carolina before the layoffs.

Bose is also moving a 70-person operation from Michigan to the Midlands. It's not clear if those people will be transferring from Michigan or if there will be 70 new jobs for people in the Midlands.
