(Columbia) - Feb. 18, 2004 - Road crews have started fixing a problem WIS News 10 first told you about a few months ago. Ron Rutledge demonstrated how dangerous traveling down Columbia's sidewalks can be for people in wheelchairs.
The problem is the curbs didn't have ramps allowing people to get on and off the sidewalks easily.
Rutledge told News 10 he just wanted to get around like everyone else and after our stories aired, the Department of Transportation said they would work to make that happen.
Crews started the first piece of the project on Huger Street on Wednesday morning. They were cutting out part of the concrete on Huger where Ron flipped his wheelchair. They will then smoothe that part of the sidewalk out into a ramp, making it easier to get on and off.
Sumter and Bull Streets are also on the list for improvement.
