Slaughterville, Oklahoma, keeps name, votes down "Veggieville" idea

(Slaughterville, Oklahoma) Feb. 18, 2004 - The town of Slaughterville, Oklahoma, has rejected the idea of changing its name. An animal rights group had suggested Slaughterville become "Veggieville."

The mayor already said the idea of changing the name was "ludicrous," and the "no" vote came in spite of a generous veggie burger offer by the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The group said they would give $20,000 worth of veggie burgers to the local school if they would just change the town's name.

PETA thought Slaughterville reminded folks of animals dying violently.

But, the town voted to continue to be named after the man who ran a grocery store there 100 years ago, James Slaughter.
