BellSouth gives SC $1 million grant to fund math, science education

(Columbia-AP) Dec. 16, 2003 - A $1 million grant from BellSouth will help middle and high school math and science teachers improve their teaching skills. Company officials say the Quality in the Classroom teaching initiative will also encourage more students to pursue careers in engineering.

South Carolina teachers will receive training as part of Project Lead the Way, a national math-and-science-based curriculum.

The grant will also fund a robotics competition organized by For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), a nonprofit organization in New Hampshire. The competition at the University of South Carolina in April will be the first in the state.

BellSouth is partnering with the state Department of Education, the University of South Carolina College of Engineering and Information Technology and the state Chamber of Commerce.
