Gattis, Freeman lead Braves past Twins 5-4 in 10th
ATLANTA (AP) - Evan Gattis hit a two-out, pinch-hit homer in the ninth to send the game to extra innings and Freddie Freeman won it in the 10th, sending the Atlanta Braves to their fifth straight win, 5-4 over the slumping Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.
Freeman blooped a two-out single off Brian Duensing (0-1) to bring home Jason Heyward, handing the Twins their seventh straight loss.
Trevor Plouffe and Ryan Doumit had RBI singles in the eighth against the depleted Atlanta bullpen, giving the Twins a 4-3 lead. They were one out away from snapping their slide when Gattis lined an 0-1 pitch from Glen Perkins deep into the left-field seats for his ninth homer of the season.
Craig Kimbrel (1-1) worked a scoreless 10th for the win.
GEORGIA-COACH RESIGNS
UGa baseball coach Perno steps down after 12 years
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Georgia baseball coach David Perno has resigned after a 12-year tenure that included three trips to the College World Series but fell on hard times in recent seasons.
The resignation was announced Monday by athletic director Greg McGarity, who praised Perno for his long contribution to the school as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.
Under Perno, Georgia won two Southeastern Conference titles, made six appearances in the NCAA Regionals, and advanced to the College World Series in 2004, 2006 and 2008. But the Bulldogs had losing SEC records 3 of the last four years, including a last-place finish (7-20) this season.
Overall, Perno had a record of 390-335-1.
NFL MEETINGS
The 50th Super Bowl goes to San Francisco Bay Area
BOSTON (AP) - The 50th Super Bowl will be held in the San Francisco Bay Area.
NFL owners have voted Tuesday for the 49ers' new stadium as host of the 2016 game. That facility in Santa Clara, Calif., is due to open for the 2014 season.
San Francisco beat out South Florida, which was stymied in its bid to stage an 11th Super Bowl when the Florida Legislature did not support financing to renovate Sun Life Stadium.
The 2017 Super Bowl will be held in Houston, which also beat out Miami for that game.
The only previous Super Bowl played in northern California was at Stanford Stadium in 1985.
Houston hosted the 2004 NFL championship game.
Earlier Tuesday, owners approved a $200 million loan for stadium construction in Atlanta.
SEC--MISSOURI-MISSISSIPPI ST
Bulldogs outlast Missouri 2-1 in 17 innings
HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - Mitch Slauter's two-out single scored Kyle Hann in the 17th inning, giving Mississippi State a 2-1 victory over Missouri Tuesday night in the opening round of the SEC baseball tournament.
The game lasted more than 4½ hours and ended at 12:25 a.m. The 17 innings matched the longest game in tournament history with Auburn-Arkansas in 1994.
Slauter's RBI ended a streak of 11 scoreless innings. Mississippi State (41-16) left a total of 17 runners on base, while Missouri (18-32) stranded 10.
MSU starter Trevor Fitts threw wild pitches to two consecutive batters in the third inning, enabling Brannon Champagne to advance to third.
Champagne then scored on a groundout to give Missouri a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth on a two-out single by Hunter Renfroe that drove in Derrick Armstrong.
Will Cox (3-1) gave up one hit over three innings for the victory.
SEC-TEXAS A&M-FLORIDA
Melton powers Texas A&M past Florida, 6-3
HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - Hunter Melton hit a three-run homer and had an RBI single to help Texas A&M defeat Florida 6-3 on Tuesday in the Aggies' first appearance in the SEC baseball tournament.
A&M starter Daniel Mengden (8-3) overcame two balks and a wild pitch to go the distance, throwing 117 pitches.
The Aggies (31-25) took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on Melton's two-out home run off Florida starter Johnny Magliozzi (4-2).
After Florida (29-28) tied the game in the fifth, Melton gave A&M a 4-3 lead in the sixth on a single that scored Blake Allemand.
Two A&M errors and a Mengden balk helped Florida take a 2-0 lead in the second. Mengden also had a wild pitch in the fifth that allowed Josh Tobias to score from third base.
The teams combined for four errors, three hit batters (all by Magliozzi), two balks and two wild pitches.
ACC'S TITLE DROUGHT
ACC looks to end 5-decade CWS title drought
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - This might be the Atlantic Coast Conference's best chance to finally end its long title drought at the College World Series.
The league hasn't produced a national champion since Wake Forest in 1955.
This season four ACC teams came to Durham for the league tournament that begins Wednesday with legitimate shots at 1 of the top-eight national seeds in next week's NCAA tournament.
All eight teams here are in the top 22 of the latest NCAA-released RPI. No other conference has more than five.
North Carolina State coach Elliott Avent calls the ACC tournament "Omaha East." And veteran Florida State coach Mike Martin said Tuesday that all eight teams have the talent to make it to the College World Series.
NCAA WOMEN
Southern Cal, San Jose State share 1st-round lead
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Southern California and San Jose State shared the lead at 4-under 284 after the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Tuesday.
USC, which won titles in 2003 and '08 and was runner-up to Alabama last year, came in as the top-ranked team in the country, while San Jose State - seeking its first team title in 21 years - was 48th.
Duke, which won back-to-back-to-back titles from 2005-2007, was in third after a 2-under 286 on the University of Georgia Golf Course, two strokes ahead of the Crimson Tide.
Spartans freshman Regan De Guzman leads the field at 5-under 67, with the Blue Devils' Celine Boutier and Alabama's Stephanie Meadow two shots back. Mississippi State's Allie McDonald and Southern Cal's Annie Park were tied for fourth at 2-under, with 14 players tied for sixth place another shot behind.
