Two-year-old severely injured by pit bull attack

SUMTER, SC (WIS) - A 2-year-old Sumter boy remains hospitalized in critical condition after being mauled by two pit bulls Sunday night.

Police say officers were dispatched to 17 Carroll Drive Sunday around 8:45 p.m. after April Sumrall reported her 2-year-old son missing. "We called his name and he didn't answer," said Yolanda, a neighbor. "When we couldn't find him, we went to the next door neighbor's house to look for him. He wasn't there."

As officers arrived on scene, the child's father found the child in the fenced back yard of 13 Carroll Drive. The child was found lying on the ground near two adult pit bull dogs, according to police.

Yolanda was there when the boy's father found him. "He was covered up with dirt," said Yolanda. "He had him close to him, so you really couldn't see. You could just see his head was covered up with dirt."

The child suffered severe head injuries. Police say it was evident that the child had been attacked by the neighbor's dogs.

The child was immediately transported to Tuomey ER and then later airlifted to Palmetto Richland Hospital. The boy's father said the child is being taken to Ohio for reconstructive surgery.

Animal Control responded to the incident location and took possession of the two pit bulls.  The animals will remain in quarantine pending results of the investigation.

Sumter police officers are still investigating the incident. So far, no charges have been filed.
