KNIGHTSVILLE, SC (WCSC) -

The coroner's office says a three-year-old girl fatally shot herself in the head on Friday in Knightsville. Coroner Chris Nisbet says India Grant used a pistol that was left loaded on a windowsill in her parent's bedroom.

The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office says the call came in at 10:45 a.m. Friday. Deputies responded to the home off Meadow Run Drive in the Meadow Run subdivision.

Capt. James Nettles says that the girl was found in her parents' bedroom and that the mother was at the home at the time, but the sheriff's office sent both parents out of the house with victim's advocates as authorities investigated the scene.

"As you can probably imagine they were distraught. This is just one of those tragic that we have to deal with," Capt. Nettles said. "We don't suspect any foul play but of course we are investigating every avenue."

Capt. Nettles says there is another child who lives at the home, who was not there at the time. He says gun owners, especially those with young children, need to use extra precaution.

"They should be locked up in preferably a gun safe. They should be locked up and out of reach," Capt. Nettles said.

Jody Welch, a manager at ATP Gunshop in Summerville says large gun safes keep guns out of a child's reach and using a gun's safety lock prevents accidental discharge. He says for someone who wants to have immediate access to a loaded gun for defense, he recommended a gun volt. It's a small safe where a gun owner can lock up one loaded handgun and type in an access code to quickly open it.

"It still gives quick access to a firearm if you ever need it, but you get the same security level to keep it out of a child's reach," Welch said.

Knightsville is located just west of Summerville in Dorchester County.
