Johnson wins District 64 special election

Posted: Updated:

CLARENDON COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Manning Mayor Kevin Johnson has been declared winner of Tuesday's special election for South Carolina House District 64, according to the Clarendon County Board of Elections.

The board said Johnson, a Democrat, received 3,358 votes. Republican Sonny Sanders received 3,033 votes.

Results will be certified on Friday, according to the board. The election fills the seat left vacant by Cathy Harvin, who died last year.

Johnson has been mayor of Manning for 11 years, and served on city council six years before that. A special election will now be held for Manning mayor.

Johnson defeated several candidates in the Democratic primary, including Alvin Greene. The unemployed veteran finished last among four candidates with less than 1 percent of the vote just eight months after he stunned the Democratic establishment by winning the party's primary for U.S. Senate.
