5 Afghan troops killed, 2 US soldier wounded in separate attacks

(Kandahar, Afghanistan-AP) Sept. 8, 2003 - Five Afghan government troops have been killed and two American soldiers wounded in separate attacks in Afghanistan.

Military officials say the Afghan forces were patrolling in southern Kandahar province when their pickup truck came under fire. There's been no claim of responsibility, but Taliban fighters are suspected. The commander says 13 suspected Taliban were arrested after last night's attack.

A military commander says five other government troops were wounded when their patrol was ambushed last night in a mountain gorge in southern Afghanistan.

The Americans were wounded in clashes with insurgents in eastern Afghanistan. One was shot in the leg and the other in the arm. They were evacuated for treatment to Bagram Air Base.

Thousands of US and allied troops are in Afghanistan continuing the hunt for fugitive fighters.
