Donalds children's home pres. denies wrongdoing in Costa Rica

(Greenville-AP) Aug. 22, 2003 - The president of a children's home in Abbeville County says charges against him in Costa Rica are baseless. Narvin Lichfield says he thinks the Department of Social Services has unfairly targeted him.

Lichfield has been told by DSS to stay away from the Carolina Springs Academy in Donalds while authorities in Costa Rica look into allegations children were held against their will and physically abused at a youth center he owns. He plans to reopen the Costa Rican facility, which was closed in May.

Lichfield told The Greenville News newspaper he thinks the investigation will be closed by the end of the month with no charges filed. Lichfield told the newspaper his name has been destroyed. He says there is no evidence against him. He says the Costa Rica allegations started with a disgruntled noncustodial parent who wanted to remove her child from the facility there.

Carolina Springs Academy attorney John Stathakis says Lichfield has agreed to stay away from the home.
