165,000 in PTL-Bakker class action each win $6.54 settlement

(Asheville, North Carolina-AP) July 31, 2003 - Nearly 165,000 people who sued the founder of the PTL ministry in York County know how much they'll get. Thousands sued Jim Bakker 16 years ago over operations of the Fort Mill ministry.

Federal Judge Lacy Thornburg has ordered a California claims administrator to issue checks for $6.54. The money comes from $3.7 million placed in a settlement fund by former PTL accountants.

The settlement came in a class-action lawsuit brought by people who said they gave a $1000 each for four-day vacations at a resort that was never built. Their attorneys won $2.5 million.

The lawyers had asked for the rest of the money, saying it would be fruitless to search for everyone involved in the suit. Thornburg denied the request.
