Radioactive materials moved from SRS to TVA

(Aiken-AP) July 24, 2003 - Officials from the US Department of Energy say the first shipment of former weapons-grade plutonium was moved from the Savannah River Site to the Tennessee Valley Authority last week.

The shipments are part of a program to remove the materials from SRS.

The Energy Department says the highly enriched uranium used in nuclear weapons is blended with natural uranium to make low-enriched uranium suitable for shipment.

DOE spokesman Joe Davis says the low-enriched uranium will be made into fuel for the TVA's reactors.

A company in Erwin, Tennessee, will convert the material for use in reactors for the authority.
