Citizens board at SRS recommends similar boards for new projects

(Columbia-AP) July 22, 2003 - The Savannah River Site Citizens Advisory Board says Tuesday a similar advisory board should be considered for two new projects at SRS that will aid in the disarmament of nuclear weapons.

Board members say a new citizen board would help ease the public's perception that the federal government is keeping secrets about the two new projects. Those projects include a plant that would disassemble nuclear warheads and a facility that would convert weapons grade plutonium into fuel for two commercial nuclear reactors.

Both projects are apart of the nation's agreement with Russia to dispose of 34 metric tons of plutonium.

The National Nuclear Safety Administration gave a presentation about the facilities to the Citizens Advisory Board on Tuesday in Columbia.

NNSA representative Ken Bromberg says he knows the federal agency can do a better job of getting the word out about the projects, but he says there have also been many public hearings on the pit disassembly facility as well as the mixed-oxide fuel facility, or MOX plant.
