Environmental impact likely won't stop relicensing for Darlington nuke plant

(Hartsville-AP) June 26, 2003 - Regulators say it is unlikely environmental obstacles will stop plans to extend the operating license for Carolina Power and Light's nuclear power plant in Darlington County.

The current, 40-year license for the HB Robsinson Nuclear Plant expires in 2010. Relicensing can extend that for up to 20 years.

Carolina Power expects to complete the relicensing process by April.

Richard Emch, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's senior environmental project manager, says the agency has reached the preliminary conclusion that continuing to operate the plant would create a small impact on the environment.
