More than 260 arrested in sweep of Iraqi town

(Near Tikrit, Iraq-AP) May 15, 2003 - The US military says a pre-dawn raid called Operation: Planet X in northern Iraq Thursday netted more than 260 prisoners. Heavily armed US Army troops stormed a village near Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit.

One of those arrested is on the US 55 most-wanted list of former Iraqi officials. His name hasn't been released.

Five Iraqi special security forces, including two Iraqi army generals and one general from Saddam Hussein's security forces who had disguised himself as a shepherd, were also reportedly caught.

Hundreds of heavily-armed American soldiers sealed off the town and went door-to-door in a five-hour sweep they'd been planning for a week. Officers say there was no resistance during sweep.

As one major put it: "Hopefully, we surprised them." The soldiers were backed up by armored vehicles and Apache helicopters, as well as patrol boats on the nearby Tigris River.

Other prisoners included teen-age boys and old men. The military says about 230 of those detained are to be released later Thursday.
