Sen. Knotts to end opposition to tattoo parlors

(Greenville-AP) May 14, 2003 - One of the state's biggest defenders of a law prohibiting tattooing in South Carolina says he will end his fight. West Columbia Senator Jake Knotts says he will no longer fight a bill to legalize and regulate tattoo parlors.

Knotts says tattoo parlors are still not good for South Carolina, but he says a visit to an illegal tattoo parlor in October 2001 convinced him police cannot stop tattoo artists, "It was a nasty hole in the wall, I mean filthy and they were performing tattoos. And when the artist went before the judge he was given a $750 fine and given his tattoo tools back."

Republican Senator Bill Mescher, of Pinopolis, says he hopes for approval for his bill next year if more legislators follow Knotts' lead. Mescher's four previous bills to legalize tattoo parlors have been rejected in the House.

Oklahoma is the only other state in the nation that bans tattooing.
