VC Sumner nuclear plant shuts down, customer should not be affected

(Jenkinsville-AP) May 13, 2003 - The V.C. Summer Nuclear Station shut itself down, but South Carolina Electric and Gas Company officials say customers should not be affected.

SCE&G spokesman Brian Duncan says the plant automatically cut off Monday morning when a non-nuclear part apparently malfunctioned.

Duncan says officials thinks a faulty voltage regulator caused the plant to shut down. He says a team is studying the situation and hopes to have it repaired quickly.

SCE&G owns two-thirds of the plant. The state-owned utility, Santee Cooper, owns the remaining one-third.

Last year, the Summer plant accounted for one fifth of SCE&G's power capacity. Duncan says the utility will increase production at other plants and buy power from other companies.
