COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Harvest Hope Food Bank distributed almost 30 million pounds of food throughout its 20-county service area last year. But because the hunger problem remains, a local real estate developer who wanted to help. He created the Giving Can, which debuted on Wednesday.
A new addition sits inside the Piggly Wiggly grocery store on Forest Drive in Columbia. A decor of food pictures covers the 300-pound container that will hold 700 pounds of food. That's about 500 cans.
The idea is to have shoppers pick up a couple extra cans and drop them in the Giving Can, and Harvest Hope will make sure this food gets to the hungry.
Real estate developer Dibble Manning and his friend Ray Debruel put together the donation machine in their workshop.
"There are just so many hungry people out there and no one has to go hungry," said Manning. "Harvest Hope has done a wonderful job in the community distributing lots of food out to the hungry people and I thought this might be a nice addition as part of what Harvest Hope does in feeding people."
Manning felt a responsibility and had the vision to help. "Dibble Manning has shown how an individual private citizen can have an idea, can be concerned and compassionate about his neighbors who are hungry," said Skot Garrick.
The giving can comes at a good time, as this season brings a greater need.
"During the summer time, children who usually get two to three meals or reduced-price meals at school, their breakfasts and lunches, well, they're at home now and they're not receiving those meals," said Garrick. "So, financially challenged parents have to come up with two additional meals, per child, per day."
A new tool to fight the problem of hunger by a man who was willing to act. "No one has to go hungry," said Manning. "Just give a can when you can to the Giving Can."
Harvest Hope sat if the food supplies food to several assistance agencies throughout the Midlands. If giving can is successful, more will be put in other grocery stores.
