WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - A wanted man is in critical condition in the hospital after he was shot during an alleged armed robbery.
Shortly before midnight Thursday, a 911 call came in to the Colleton County Sheriff's Office in reference to an attempted armed robbery and shooting that occurred near the intersection of McLeod Road and I-95 near mile marker 62.
When deputies arrived, they found three victims of a robbery attempt that stated they were traveling I-95 southbound in two separate vehicles, one pulling a U-Haul trailer. The vehicle pulling the trailer started having mechanical trouble, so they pulled off onto the exit ramp at McLeod Road in Colleton County near Walterboro.
They called for a tow truck and proceeded to transfer the U-Haul trailer from the disabled vehicle to the second vehicle. One of the female victims was standing by her vehicle and her daughter stood near the other vehicle and trailer while her husband trying to wire the trailer lights into his truck.
At that time, a silver-colored sedan pulled up occupied by three individuals and a male subject, later identified as David Jayquon Jakes, 19, exited the back seat and pointed a large caliber handgun at one of the women.
The victims said Jakes was covering his face with a cloth of some type and started ordering her as he referred to her as "pretty lady." At that time, the woman's son-in-law stood up from behind his vehicle and she ran to her daughter as they took cover.
Her son-in-law was armed and drew his weapon and ordered them to leave several times. As Jakes turned and pointed his large caliber weapon, the son-in-law fired several rounds striking Jakes who then fell to the ground and dropped his weapon.
The two subjects in the suspect vehicle helped the wounded Jakes back into their vehicle and fired several rounds back at the victim and then drove away.
A short time later, the Colleton Regional Hospital staff notified the Sheriff's Office that they just had an individual come in to their emergency room with several gun shot wounds. The individual fit the general description of Jakes and other information was collected indicating that he believed to be the same person.
Jakes was transferred to a Charleston-area hospital where he was last reported to be in critical condition. The recovered weapon presented by Jakes at the scene was recovered and found to be reported to NCIC as a stolen weapon.
The incident is still under investigation but deputies obtained warrants charging Jakes with three counts of attempted armed robbery, three counts of assault with the intent to kill, one count of possessing a stolen firearm and one count of possessing a weapon during a violent crime.
The male victim of the robbery attempt that fired in self-defense just recently returned from the Middle East as an Army Specialist and had a Concealed Weapons Permit to carry his weapon.
No charges are pending against him at this time and none are anticipated to be filed against him, said officials.
