LANCASTER COUNTY, SC (WBTV) - Sheriff's deputies in Lancaster County are investigating a deadly shooting involving a 3-year-old girl which happened Monday night.

According to Major David Belk who is with the sheriff's office, the girl was shot and killed around 9:40 p.m.

The shooting happened at a home on Athena Road which is located south of the town of Lancaster.

A couple of neighbors on Tuesday said they initially heard one shot followed by multiple shots from a gun.  They also said the girl was in the back seat of a vehicle parked in the driveway when the shooting occurred.  The sheriff's office, however, has not confirmed these details at this time.

The child was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where she died according to Lancaster County coroner Mike Morris.

Authorities have not said if the child shot herself or if she was shot by someone else.  They also aren't commenting on whether anyone is in custody in connection with the shooting.

The sheriff's office is expected to released more details about the shooting this afternoon.
