Eckstrom: State revenue down 6.4 percent

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - State Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom says stat revenues are down 6.4 percent compared to last year.

Eckstrom says the state has taken in $247.7 million less from July 1 – Feb. 28. In February alone, the state took in $65.7 million less than February 2009.

The state Board of Economic Advisers had predicted February to be a tough month, but revenue drops were worse than expected, Eckstrom said.

The state's top accountant says state legislators should keep those numbers in mind while crafting the state's budget for the next fiscal year.

"Given this uncertainty, I'd advise state agencies to spend very, very carefully, and perhaps, out of an abundance of caution, consider leaving some funds unspent because of additional budget cuts that could still be necessary between now and the year end," said Eckstrom in a statement.
