COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A state judiciary panel ruled last week that it was okay for judges to be on Facebook as long as they aren't discussing judge-related matters on the website.
The State Advisory Committee on Standards of Judicial Conduct offered one of the first opinions on the matter in the country behind Florida.
According to the panel, a magistrate judge inquired to them if it were okay to be a member of the social networking site and to be friends with law enforcement officers and employees of the Magistrate's office.
The panel said it was fine for state judges to be on Facebook and be friends with law enforcement officers as long as long as they do not discuss anything related to the judge's position as magistrate.
The state of Florida recommended that judges not be friends with lawyers out of fear of a conflict of interest.
