WIS News 10 - Columbia, South Carolina | One killed after garbage truck flips onto car

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Two people were trapped and one later died after a garbage truck flipped onto a car near Billy Graham Parkway in Charlotte Friday afternoon.

The incident happened when a City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services garbage truck overturned onto a car at about 2:10 pm in the 3200 block of Billy Graham Parkway and West Boulevard, police said.

One of the two people who were trapped in the car in the wreck died. Another person was trapped for nearly two hours after the wreck before being freed.

A helicopter flew to the scene to airlift the injured person and waited for the person to be extracted.

Three patients -- two from the car and the truck driver -- were already taken to Carolinas Medical Center by ambulance.

Police later said the driver of the garbage truck lost control while turning a corner -- crushing a 4-door sedan with four people inside. 

The wreck completely closed West Boulevard and partially closed Billy Graham Parkway. Nearly 50 firefighters help with the rescue of the person and a large crane was brought in to flip the garbage truck back over.

A city press release said that there were three workers on the truck - the driver and two laborers to assist with yard waste collection.

The city said that the driver was a temporary employee and not employed directly by the City of Charlotte.  He has been working through the staffing agency for the City of Charlotte for a month. This was his first accident while operating a city vehicle, city officials said.

The driver and one of the other workers went to local hospitals with non life-threatening injuries, the city said.
