BISHOPVILLE, SC (WIS) - Bishopville police are investigating a possible kidnapping Wednesday morning, and say the suspect left behind a baseball cap which may contain DNA evidence.

Police Chief John E. Ewing Jr. said several saw the incident happen around 9:30am Wednesday at Main and Church Streets.

Witnesses said a woman was driving a grey or light brown newer vehicle on Main Street. The vehicle has been described as looking like a Chevy Cavalier, Ewing said.

When the woman turned onto Church Street, a tall skinny man wearing a black and orange baseball cap walked in front of the vehicle. Ewing said the man started beating the woman, jumped into the backseat and the two drove off.
The vehicle was last seen heading North on Hwy 15 towards Darlington County.

"At this point we are not sure if the two individuals know each other or not," said Chief Ewing. "We also have very little information to go on."

Ewing said the black cap fell off, and police are sending it to SLED for DNA testing.

"Even though we have very little information to go on, we are very concerned about this incident and until we know more, we are investigating this as a kidnapping," said Ewing.

Chief Ewing said he hopes anyone in the area that may have seen something will come forward with information that will assist in the investigation.

Anyone with information pertaining to this incident can contact the Bishopville Police Department at 803-484-5309 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
