SCOTT'S BRANCH, SC (WIS) - The principal of a Clarendon County high school is charged with aggravated criminal domestic violence after Florence police said he pointed a gun at his wife.
According to an incident report, Bernard McDaniels, 52, of Florence, returned home from being out of town on November 7. When a cell phone belonging to McDaniels' wife Pam rang, McDaniels answered the phone and began to check his wife's text messages.
The report said McDaniels accused his wife of having an affair, pulled a revolver out of his briefcase and pointed it at her.
The McDaniels' 15-year-old son asked his father to put down the gun, saying he knew McDaniels "didn't want to hurt Mom." The report says McDaniels then put the gun away.
Superintendent Rose Wilder tells us she first found out about McDaniel's arrest Tuesday night when a reporter called her. She would not say if she has spoken to McDaniel since.
Wilder says she's waiting on the guidance of the district's lawyer, before any decisions are made.
Parents say McDaniel's arrest is no mystery to their kids as rumors have been flying from cell phone to cell phone all day. The question is can McDaniel still be an effective role model for students?
Parent Ernestine Thomas thinks so.
"What he do in his personal life is his personal life, but what I know when he comes to that school house he handle his business," said Thomas.
"Depending on how the case goes, I think that's what's gonna decide whether he can be a suitable role model or not," said Gregory Aiken.
Wilder says Wednesday just happened to be McDaniel's last day at the school until after Thanksgiving. He's leaving town to be a guest speaker at a national conference. He'll be speaking about the success of Scott's Branch High School.
