US recommends approval of plans to convert plutonium at SRS for use in commercial reactors

(Columbia-AP) Feb. 26, 2003 - The federal government has recommended approving plans to convert surplus weapons-grade plutonium into fuel for commercial nuclear reactors at the Savannah River Site.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the project should be licensed unless safety issues still under study show otherwise.

The report also says any catastrophic accident involving the plant to be highly unlikely, but officials say a leak of some radioactive hydrogen gas used in nuclear weapons would cause 400 cancer deaths within a year after the event.
