COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Jenny Sanford is responding after WIS News 10 reported the South Carolina first lady filed a trademark for her name days after her husband admitted an extramarital affair this summer.
An entry on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website shows the trademark was filed on July 2, eight days after Gov. Mark Sanford admitted the affair with an Argentine woman.
Ms. Sanford moved out of the governor's mansion to their home on Sullivan's Island in August, two months after her husband's public admission.
The trademark application categorizes Ms. Sanford's name as "Goods and Services" used in "product merchandising to be sold at on-line retail store featuring clothing, mugs and other household items; stickers, decals, notepads."
"I have no intention to sell anything with my name on it but did not want anyone else to do so either," Ms. Sanford said, calling questions about the application "silly."
Following Gov. Sanford's admission on June 24, a website began to sell "Team Jenny" merchandise, though the products used only Ms. Sanford's first name and the phrase "Don't cry for me Argentina."
The Patent and Trademark Office has not decided whether to allow Ms. Sanford's name to be trademarked. On September 30, the USPTO sent Ms. Sanford a request for additional information "and/or making an initial refusal," according to the website.
In late September, nearly two months after the trademark was filed, publisher Ballantine Books announced a deal for Ms. Sanford to write a memoir.
ABC announced on Thursday Barbara Walters will interview Ms. Sanford as one of "The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2009." The program will air on December 9.
No trademark applications have been filed for Governor Sanford's name, according to the USPTO website.
