COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The national bank Wachovia Wells Fargo will donate $100,000 to Harvest Hope Food Bank, officials with the charity announced Friday.
In addition to directly reducing hunger in the Midlands, Harvest Hope said, a portion of the funding will go toward opening a new food pantry on Laurel Street, near the intersection with Gregg Street.
“Despite the effects of the current economic downturn felt throughout their own business, Wachovia Wells Fargo has found the heart and will to dig deep and graciously give to their neighbors,” said Harvest Hope Chief Executive Officer Denise Holland. “We hope they serve as inspiration to others in the business community to step up and meet the needs of the hungry and suffering in the Midlands.”
South Carolina has the second highest level of unemployment in the nation and the fifth highest hunger population in the country, Harvest Hope officials said.
"We are in unprecedented times and now more than ever we have neighbors in need," said Holt Chetwood, Midlands Market President for Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Company. "The Harvest Hope Food Bank is experiencing tremendous demand, and we are proud to support the food bank in their efforts to help all members of our community."
A press conference to officially accept the donation will be held on Thursday, November 19 at 10:00am at 2220 Shop Road in Columbia.
