Lowcountry pilot announces bid for Congress

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, SC (AP) — A South Carolina pilot whose New York-bound jet was diverted to Canada during the 2001 terrorist attacks says he's running for Congress.

Robert Burton of Mount Pleasant announced his bid Tuesday for the 1st District seat. The 51-year-old Democrat says he wants to prevent another 9/11.

Burton is a full-time commercial pilot and a colonel in the Air Force Reserve. He plans to retire from the military next month after 10 years of active duty with the South Carolina Air National Guard and nearly two decades as a reservist.

His service includes three tours of duty in the Mideast.

He is expected to face opposition in the June Democratic primary. GOP incumbent Rep. Henry Brown faces a primary challenge from Carroll Campbell and Katherine Jenerette.
