Two brothers head to Washington on Honor Flight

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A group of World War II veterans are resting after returning from a round trip to Washington DC as part of the "Honor Flight" program.

Brothers DN and Shelby Pou from Orangeburg County shared their memories from the war and their excitement over visiting the memorial.

Nearly 70 years ago, the two were stationed in the Philippines during the war.

Now the two find themselves on a new adventure through the Honor Flight program.

The trips are paid for through donations and fundraisers. Hundreds of vets have taken the trips and this weekend it was their turn.

A heroes welcome greeted the veterans as they returned to Columbia Metropolitan Airport on Saturday night.

One word describes their experience according to DN. "Wonderful," he said. "It was wonderful. Everything about today was wonderful."

The honors began when the plane touched down.

"We got to Washington, it was terrific," said Shelby. "Even had the fire trucks to water the plane"

But the main attraction was seeing the memorial.

"They took great care of us and the World War II memorial was outstanding," said DN. "Something you can't imagine until you go see it."

These veterans don't have to imagine anymore. It's now another rich, interesting story the "greatest generation" can pass to the youngest generation.
