ATLANTA (AP) - The dean of Emory University's School of Medicine has been named the chairman-elect of the Association of American Medical Colleges.
Dr. Thomas J. Lawley will take the position next year after newly elected chairwoman Dr. Deborah E. Powell leaves office. Powell is associate vice president for new medical education programs at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Lawley has been dean at Emory since 1996. He is a dermatologist and expert in autoimmune skin diseases.
The AAMC represents all 131 accredited medical schools in the United States, 17 programs in Canada, nearly 400 major teaching hospitals and 90 academic and scientific societies.
